Palm Sunday and Holy Week are the central days in the church year.  These holy days remind us of the last hours of Jesus' earthly life, which culminates with this death on the cross on Good Friday.  With the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night and the Holy Eucharist on Easter Day, we celebrate the ressurrection and the presence of the Risen Christ with us!

In order to experience the full joy and celebration of Easter, it is important for us to immerse ourselves as fully as possible in the liturgical and worship offerings of Holy Week and to walk with Jesus through his last days.

This year, the Palm Sunday liturgy on March 28th will have a new format.  As in past years, we will gather at the beginning of our worship time in the rear of the church at the 8 a.m. service, and out front for the 10 a.m. service, for the Palm Sunday liturgy and distribution of the palms.  We will then process, as Jesus did on the first Palm Sunday, back into the church sanctuary.  We will then move with Jesus to his Last Supper (for us, the peace, offertory and Holy Eucharist), followed by the narrative reading of the Passion Gospel, which continues the journey through Jesus' prayers, betrayal and arrest in the garden, to his trial, suffering and death on the cross.  At the conclusion of the Passion Gospel, our service will be over and we will depart in silence.

While the order of this Palm Sunday worship service will be different from usual, it should prove to be spiritually powerful and enriching.

Later in Holy Week, the Eucharist will be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31st.  On Maundy Thursday, April 1st, we will celebrate the potluck Seder Supper and Eucharist, which is an informal meal setting in which we recount the Last Supper and its comparisons to the Jewish Passover Seder.  This gathering is a wonderful social and educational time for parishioners of all ages, and culminates with the Holy Eucharist at the dinner table, much like Jesus and his friends shared the Passover meal/Last Supper.  (Please sign up on the poster outside of the church office to indicate that you will attend and what you will be able to bring to share!)

On April 2nd, Good Friday, the solemn Good Friday liturgy will be observed at 12 noon and again at 7 p.m., when the Sunday School will present music and the Passion Pageant.  The Easter celebrations will begin on April 3rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Easter Vigil, after sundown with the lighting of the Paschal Fire, renewal of baptismal vows and the Eucharist.  The Easter celebration continues with the Holy Eucharist on April 4th, Easter Day, at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

On Friday and Saturday, January 25th and 26th the 113 congregations which make up the Diocese of Newark gathered for the Annual Diocesan Convention in Parsippany. Each church in the diocese elects three lay representatives to attend convention each year. This year our two Wardens, Beth Abrahamson and Shannon Ionnotta, along with Bob Bogert on Friday and Matthew Piermatti (as alternate deputy filling in for Bob Bogert) on Saturday, represented our St. Paul’s Church. All clergy in the diocese attend as well. With all of these representatives present, there are around 500 people gathered in the large meeting room!

Our meeting on Friday began at 1:30 p.m. with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist, led by our Bishop Mark Beckwith. The business session then followed and lasted several hours, and then all delegates had the chance to attend breakout sessions to listen to committee reports. In the evening all gathered together again for the banquet and the Bishop’s address. On Saturday, the morning began with Eucharist and then the business session until the conclusion of convention at 4:00 p.m.

It is always interesting and inspiring to be at convention, to be with colleagues and friends, new and old, and to hear about and be a part of the exciting work in which our diocese is engaged! Matthew Piermatti is on the “Civil Union Task Force” and was a part of the presentation given by that group. Also, at this convention, we held the election of deputies to General Convention, the once every three year meeting of the entire Episcopal Church, which will be held in July 2009 in Anaheim, California. Each diocese elects four lay and four clergy deputies, as well as four alternate deputies in each order. I was honored to be elected as “First Alternate”, which means I will be going to the General Convention next summer, as our diocese sends the first alternate in each order along with the four regular deputies. Subsequently, on February 2, the Rev. Prince Singh, rector of St. Alban’s Church in Oakland NJ, and “2nd Deputy” elected to go to General Convention, was elected as Bishop of Rochester, NY. Prince will not be representing the Diocese of Newark at General Convention, so I have moved up and became one of the four regular deputies!

The best part of Diocesan Convention for me is always the opportunity to be with the many fascinating people of our diocese! This year each congregation was randomly assigned to sit at a table with another congregation in the diocese for both days of the convention. We sat with the representatives from St. Paul’s Jersey City and had a great time getting to know each other.

We are certainly blessed to be in the Diocese of Newark, which has been and continues to be a leader on issues of justice and inclusion, and which is an excellent representation of the wide breadth of God’s Children in this state and this church. Being a part of the “larger whole” of the Diocese of Newark, the Episcopal Church USA and the world wide Anglican Communion is truly a great blessing and privilege.

Have you seen our new outdoor Chapel yet?! It is right behind the playground fence near the woods. This beautiful space was created for us by Eric Muller, a life-long member of St. Paul’s Church and a junior at Pascack Hills High School. Eric created the chapel as part of his eagle scout project for boy scouts. In the summer of 2006 Eric approached the vestry with his concept for an outdoor chapel, an his idea was enthusiastically embraced by the parish leadership. Over the ensuing months, Eric presented drawings and ideas which were discussed with some suggestions and a few alterations. Final approval was given and in the early spring of this year, Eric organized the project and started construction.

As you will see when you visit the chapel, Eric carved and sanded a beautiful cross, planted rhododendrons, laid out a center rock path and constructed a wonderful altar and sturdy benches. Thank you Eric, for your good work and your gift to St. Paul’s!

The chapel was used formally for the first time in early September at the Wednesday 12:15 p.m. Worship/Eucharist. A prayer of thanksgiving for the space was said, and then the eleven people present celebrated the Holy Eucharist. It was a wonderful, unique experience! Everyone agreed that it is a very peaceful, quiet, reflective space. I plan to use it often for our mid-week services and for other worship occasions. I hope it will come to be a place where many of you will visit for our worship services and for prayer and meditation. The benches and altar are movable, so this offers exciting possibilities for various configurations of this sacred worship space. We have such a beautiful and unique piece of property, in the midst of an area which is becoming increasingly built-up and congested, so this new chapel is a wonderful use of this space.

Please visit the chapel, and when you do, think about a possible name for this holy space - we will gather all submitted name possibilities and pick one for our new chapel!

Other than singing in the chorus in elementary school, and as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz in 4th grade, I have never sung formally with any group or choir. I have always loved many different types of music and enjoy singing, especially hymns in church, but never felt real confident about my voice and singing ability. So it was with some apprehension that I agreed to join the Saint Paul’s choir for the season of Lent and Easter Day.

By joining the choir I learned many things. First of all, it is fun! I did not expect choir to be fun, but it is! And the main reason choir is fun is because of the people involved. Our choir is made up of an extremely talented group of people, with a wide range of choral experience and training, who take their music ministry very seriously, but don’t take themselves too seriously! Ingrid Steele is an excellent Choir Director, and always knows just the right thing to say in every situation. She is a great teacher, and has an instinctive knack of knowing how to blend rookies (me) with veterans (most everyone else) and make each of us feel comfortable, appreciated, and that we are making a contribution. It is obvious that Ingrid has great skill and experience, and she runs rehearsal time with good humor and good time management.

I learned that I am a tenor. Tenors are male voices that sing the higher range notes. I also learned that these are not the notes I usually try to follow and sing out of the hymnal each Sunday morning! And it takes quite a bit of work and concentration to follow the “tenor line” (rather then the “melody line”, or one of the other lines I might have been following before!) But I also learned that the hard work and concentration pays off, because when all the four parts - soprano, alto, tenor and bass - all blend together, our choir sounds really good!

It has been a great experience being a part of the choir. They all took very good care of me, and always supported and encouraged me, in spite of my lack of experience. We sang great pieces of music which were fun and challenging to work on. I look forward to participating with the choir from time to time in the future, and I would encourage all parishioners to consider joining our choir! Really! If I could do it, you can do it! Even if you try the choir for a season or a few months as a trial period, I guarantee it will be a satisfying experience for you.

Palm Sunday and Holy Week are the central days in the church year.  These holy days remind us of the last hours of Jesus' earthly life, which culminates with this death on the cross on Good Friday.  With the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night and the Holy Eucharist on Easter Day, we celebrate the ressurrection and the presence of the Risen Christ with us!

In order to experience the full joy and celebration of Easter, it is important for us to immerse ourselves as fully as possible in the liturgical and worship offerings of Holy Week and to walk with Jesus through his last days.

This year, the Palm Sunday liturgy on March 28th will have a new format.  As in past years, we will gather at the beginning of our worship time in the rear of the church at the 8 a.m. service, and out front for the 10 a.m. service, for the Palm Sunday liturgy and distribution of the palms.  We will then process, as Jesus did on the first Palm Sunday, back into the church sanctuary.  We will then move with Jesus to his Last Supper (for us, the peace, offertory and Holy Eucharist), followed by the narrative reading of the Passion Gospel, which continues the journey through Jesus' prayers, betrayal and arrest in the garden, to his trial, suffering and death on the cross.  At the conclusion of the Passion Gospel, our service will be over and we will depart in silence.

While the order of this Palm Sunday worship service will be different from usual, it should prove to be spiritually powerful and enriching.

Later in Holy Week, the Eucharist will be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31st.  On Maundy Thursday, April 1st, we will celebrate the potluck Seder Supper and Eucharist, which is an informal meal setting in which we recount the Last Supper and its comparisons to the Jewish Passover Seder.  This gathering is a wonderful social and educational time for parishioners of all ages, and culminates with the Holy Eucharist at the dinner table, much like Jesus and his friends shared the Passover meal/Last Supper.  (Please sign up on the poster outside of the church office to indicate that you will attend and what you will be able to bring to share!)

On April 2nd, Good Friday, the solemn Good Friday liturgy will be observed at 12 noon and again at 7 p.m., when the Sunday School will present music and the Passion Pageant.  The Easter celebrations will begin on April 3rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Easter Vigil, after sundown with the lighting of the Paschal Fire, renewal of baptismal vows and the Eucharist.  The Easter celebration continues with the Holy Eucharist on April 4th, Easter Day, at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
